Navigation Skills with ROC Wales

Build confidence. Read the landscape. Find your way.

At ROC Wales, we believe that everyone should feel confident and capable in the outdoors. That's why we offer high-quality, practical navigation training through the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) – a nationally recognised programme designed to help people of all ages and backgrounds develop essential map and compass skills.

Why Learn Navigation?

Navigation is a core outdoor skill. Whether you're a complete beginner, a casual walker, or someone looking to develop more independence in the hills, learning to navigate can transform your experience of the countryside.

With the right skills, you'll be able to:

  • Read and interpret maps with confidence
  • Use a compass to follow accurate routes
  • Plan your own adventures safely
  • Navigate in poor visibility or unfamiliar terrain
  • Build resilience and awareness in remote environments

Our training is hands-on, supportive, and taught in real outdoor settings – helping you feel at ease and empowered to explore.

What to Expect

  • Practical, instructor-led sessions based in the beautiful Brecon Beacons and surrounding areas
  • Small group sizes to ensure plenty of individual attention
  • A structured approach that builds your skills step by step
  • Friendly, inclusive learning – no prior experience required
  • Focus on real-world navigation scenarios and problem-solving
  • Recognition through the National Navigation Award Scheme for those who wish to gain certification

Whether you're new to map reading or looking to refine your skills, our courses are designed to meet you where you are.

Who Is It For?

Navigation training is suitable for:

  • Walkers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all levels
  • Youth groups, educators, and DofE leaders
