ROC  Adventures are here to help you and your party develop new skills, or brush up on existing skills. All experiences will offer something new and indeed something challenging. So whatever your planned activity for the day, be honest with yourself about your own abilities and those of the group when it comes to fitness and ability. We all like to kid ourselves that we are fitter, or indeed more capable than we are but in this instance it pays to be honest. This is why you are going guided, use this opportunity to use the expertise at hand and to learn. If you are not with a guide, an honest, realistic approach to capabilities, could mean the difference between a good day and a bad day.


General Advice

Know where you are going

If your aren't walking with a capable guide, it is essential to carry a map/chart and compass and know how to use them. Every year thousands of people end up calling for help because they are lost and/or tired.

Paper maps may seem unnecessary but they are light to carry and don't need signal or batteries. For simple guides to map reading and using a compass check out OS Beginner’s Guides. 


Plan your pace and route for the least able member of your group

If reaching the summit is going to be a challenge then switch to a lower level walk that you can all enjoy and achieve comfortably.

A comfort zone stretch is great, but too much and it could be a stressful day, possibly dangerous.

At ROC Outdoors, we carefully consider the capabilities if the whole group and the itinerary planned.


Know your limits

Weather and obstacles can interrupt your plans, even your own limits on the day. If the weather, ground conditions or route are beyond your capabilities or equipment, re-consider your options.

It really is OK to choose a more suitable route or to turn back. Allow enough time for the least able member of your group to complete the walk, with enough rest breaks.

This is not a sign of weakness, go with a qualified guide ensures you and your party get the most out of the day/trip, it is less stressful and has some expertise along the way.
