Frequently Asked Questions

What areas do you cover and how do I decide?

ROC Outdoors will consider guided in walks in most if not all locations throughout Wales. The beauty of bespoke walks is that you discuss your requirements and ideas and the package is designed to fulfill the needs of you and your party. Our expert qualified Mountain Leader will help make the right choice to suit the fitness and ability levels of your party to ensure that you get the most out of your experience. Simply email info@roc-outdoors.co.uk or complete the enquire now form to start discussing your plans.

Our guided walks are designed to be sociable, enjoyable and informative and can even incorporate a start or end at a café or inn, can be half a day or even a few days with camping or B&B stays.

Prior to the walk you would receive a full itinerary of what to expect, right down to the fine detail such as where to park.

Who can book onto the guided walks

ROC outdoors offer a bespoke experience and can tailor walks for the individual, couple or small group of friends or team (up to 12).

Our experiences are deigned for like-minded people who love the outdoors,  maybe wanting either learn new skills or simply to get out and enjoy and experience being guided across the hills and mountains. We can cater for all ages and varied abilities, from children to octogenarians; however, the ‘typical’ age range is between 30 and 60. Everyone is very welcome. The best part of the walk is getting to know everyone.

All participants will need to be assessed around suitability for your chosen walk and a consent form completed for each.

For your peace of mind, as well as being a qualified ML and super experienced and knowledgeable, our qualified mountain leader holds an enhanced DBS check and first aid certificate.

Age restrictions

Most of our walks are suitable for all ages. Under 18s (minimum age 12) may attend if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and approved by our qualified Mountain Leader prior to the walk. The child must be accompanied at all times during the walk by their parent/legal guardian. We reserve the right to decline under 18's if we feel the package is not suitable as some of our walks may be on difficult terrain, long in length and therefore only suitable for over 18s.

What about my four legged friend?

ROC Outdoors will need to know in advance of your intention to bring a dog and approve the request. We would need to consider the walk, terrain, other walkers and other possible 4 legged friends already approved to attend (if any).

In most cases, you are welcome to bring a well-behaved dog with you on some of our walks. Your dog MUST be insured, wormed and kept on a lead at all times. Some of our walks may not be suitable for dogs, due to ground-nesting birds, livestock, terrain etc. Therefore, you must have permission from us before the course/walk in order to bring your dog with you.

Registered assistance dogs are always welcome.

Are these walks suitable for beginners?

Our Eryri (Snowdonia) and Brecon Beacons guided walks are perfect for beginners. If arranging a bespoke walk, we would always plan according to suitability for all walkers.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The hike is on! A bit of rain or gloomy weather doesn't mean a bad day ahead. The events will still go ahead unless we feel it is too dangerous, we can always explore a plan B, alternate route. If however it is unsafe, the decision may be made to reschedule. It rains a lot in Wales and especially in the mountains, sometimes we are lucky and sometimes not. So being prepared for wet and windy conditions usually means we can walk as planned.

How fast is the pace?

In a group of up to 12, we may have mixed abilities. If there was a full group of 12, the leader may split the group in to smaller groups, 2-3 smaller groups based on pace. Just stay together in the group you are all comfortable walking in. The qualified and experienced mountain leader will keeps check on all walkers, no-one gets left behind.

What do I need to bring?

Depending on the schedule, you will receive a detailed set of walk information documents when you have booked. This will contain everything you need for your guided walk.

What time do the guided walks start and finish?

Start and end times will be in the walk information documents. A typical full day walking usually means the walks start at 9.00am and expect to be finished around 5.00pm. However you may have planned star-gazing, or a sunrise walk. The joy of bespoke guided walks, is that start and end times can vary and can be pre-determined by you, in advance. Unless scheduled to walk in the dark, plans would generally be to have ended the walk before sundown, or to at least be setting up camp.
